75 Acre Trash Facility Planned For Canyon Country

This is an important Canyon Country Neighborhood Alert.

On January 22, as stated in Consent Calendar item 12, the Santa Clarita City Council unanimously approved a measure that kicked off a process to allow Burrtec Waste Industries to build a 75 Acre Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Transfer Station in Canyon Country.  The facility's proposed location is between Sierra Highway and Highway 14, between Golden Valley Road and Placerita Canyon Road.

Translated into plain English this means, trash from all over the city will be trucked to this facility on Sierra Highway in Canyon Country, sorted and then re-trucked, as appropriate, to recycle facilities or to a landfill. Opponents of this project have estimated that would create approx. 880 truck trips per day, 6 days a week.

All this to be accomplished in an area primarily zoned residential and within close proximity to existing residential housing tracts. And oh yes, the project has been sized 5 times larger than previously proposed in an industrial area.

You think that traffic on Sierra Highway is bad now?  If this passes you will be treated to an average of 1 truck trip every 54 seconds. Think about the increased traffic. Think about the pollution generated by all those trucks.  Think about your quality of life as the city grows and with it so does the trash load.  Think about what is going to happen when the facility ages and all the neighborhood pollution guarantees go out the window.

The only thing that will make this ill conceived plan a reality is if we do nothing. It is time for us to stand up and JUST SAY NO.  No to Burrtec Waste Industries.  No to the City of Santa Clarita.  Put this project where it belongs, in a Heavy Industries Industrial Area, not near our homes.

Contact the Santa Clarita City Council Members, City Manager, City Staff and Burrtec Industries and let them know how you feel.

Two immediate meetings have been scheduled by "Stop.The.Dump" to provide the community with information about this project.  Every Canyon Country resident should make every effort to attend.

The first on Monday February 25 at the Mint Canyon Moose Lodge at 7PM, located at 18000 Sierra Hwy, Canyon Country, California 91351 (On Sierra Highway north of Soledad).
The second on Tuesday February 28 in the Friendly Valley Multi Purpose Room at 7PM, located at 19345 Avenue of the Oaks, Newhall (West of Sierra Highway on Friendly Valley Parkway).

Additional information can be obtained by emailing Mr. Joe Thompson at stop.the.dump4@gmail.com

The time to act is now.
See you Monday night.

What else can we expect from the city. They think we are trash on the East side.

In addition to all of the problems that are associated with the Dirty MRF, has anyone considered the privacy issues of someone going through our trash? Of course we all should be shredding documents so that we don't become victims of identity theft, BUT most folks seldom do. Who will Burrtec attract to sift through our trash? I sure wouldn't do it! You suppose they might steal our personal information for identity theft?

I cannot believe that this decision was made! What are they thinking? The impact to traffic, pollution, wildlife, our home values! There are so many other location choices; why select one that is in the midst of housing and a growing population? I'd like to know who's paying who off? or sleeping with who? This decision makes no sense at all. Why don't they build it over off the I-5 and 126? There, it is close to the Chiquita Canyon Disposal Facility where some of the non recycled trash will go anyway. The area near the 126 at the I-5 is already an industrial area. The site would be close enough to put the jails inmate labor to work to separate the recyclables, or they could build a homeless shelter next door to this plant, and put the homeless to work. There are many better options than to place it near our residential neighborhoods.

I wonder if Mayor Bob Kellar.. is making anything of this dump site. I would love to hear from him to see how this is going to improve Santa Clarita. Frank Ferry should just know better..after years of listening to him at Valenica High School preach about right from wrong im glad i was right about his advice and placing it in my crap pile.. if this passes both of thier family names will be tarnished with this dump.

Seems to me a site under power lines, with few or no oak trees, sandwiched between Sierra Highway and the 14 is a reasonable place for a reclamation facility. And since I imagine very few of us want a landfill in the area, we certainly need a recycling center. I'm not complaining at this point about the proposed site. It's not that close to homes or schools and it's private land that is unsuitable for homes or commercial development, given the instability of the slopes in that area.

As part of this proposed building will Via Princessa be put through to Golden Valley or even to San Fernando Road, as has been on the drawing board for some time? This would allow trucks easier access to the facility, since Placerita Canyon Road is not a public road.

The location does seem a logical choice for the reasons stated. However, that triangle of Sierra, Placerita, and SR-14 has always been the culmination point for thousands of commuters. Traffic this a.m. was backed up to the Via Princessa overpass - and that is without additional garbage trucks or the freight trucks that will be needed to take away the recycling. We have an active battle with CEMEX, citing concerns with truck traffic as a main point of contention. Why is this any different?

What is the Santa Clarita City Councel thinking? ? ?
Do they not care about the health and welfare of our children?
Do they not care about the trash, road-ways and traffic conditions it will cause in the City? Trucks will be coming through Valencia, Saugus and Newhall too. Soledad will be a main thorough fair.
What is going to happen when Newhall Farm and Land build all their homes they have plans for? All their trash will be trucked in too.
      THINK ABOUT THIS PEOPLE!
I am personally appalled at the lack of concern by our Councel Members!
CANYON COUNTRY IS NOT A DUMPING GROUND!
I thought we were all in this together.

      RE: TRASHING Canyon Country
I say NO WAY, NO SIR to just "dumping" ALL the unwanted's in "OUR" neighborhood. Just build "another" car wash if you must find a way to employ the illegals.

As I long time resident of Canyon Country, I resent the idea of a trash facility being housed in Canyon Country! I know for a fact that any unpopular facility is always destined for CC.

"I know for a fact that any unpopular facility is always destined for CC." Really? Last I looked, the county jail was in Castaic and a lot closer to Valencia and Stevenson Ranch than it is to Canyon Country. And the landfill's in Val Verde. The homeless shelter is near Centre Pointe and Golden Valley this year. The bus maintenance yard is off Copperhill near Newhall Ranch Road. And the biggest, nastiest at-grade railroad crossing in the SCV is in Newhall, where the tracks cross San Fernando Road. Santa Clarita features three charming Wal-Marts, on Copperhill, Centre Pointe, and The Old Road. Canyon Country doesn't get all the bad stuff...of course, there are a lot of the good facilities we don't get, like Central Park and the community center and commuter bus service and flush plumbing at the train station. Princessa station still has porta potties. But we aren't the only portion of the SCV that gets undesirable development.

And where is the residential development near the proposed recycling facility, anyway? There are homes on the south side of Golden Valley east of Sierra Highway but these are separated from the proposed site by a high ridge. Other than that, there are homes on both sides of Sierra north of Golden Valley, and the next residential development south is either the homes on Placerita, some way west of Sierra, or Polynesian Mobile Home Park -- which in itself is one of the unloveliest features of the SCV, and that's in Newhall, not Canyon Country.

I am appalled that our very own elected officials would sell us down the river once again and treat us like a dumping ground. This trash facility has no business being put in an area so close to our homes and schools. There are other more appropriate areas where such a facility should be allowed. Why is Canyon Country always the chosen area for such detrimental disasters. There are a lot of open canyons west of Stevenson's Ranch, or up near the 126,or even the area that is slated for the Las Lomas sub-division located between Sylmar and Santa Clarita. Why on Earth would anyone consider the area between Golden Valley and Placerita off Sierra Hwy. This is an area that is surrounded by new neighborhoods and schools and a soon-to-be shopping area. I wish they would stop trying to destroy Canyon Country. We have the highest crime rate in Santa Clarita, we have the greatest amount of graffiti in Santa Clarita, we have the most trailer parks, the most HUD projects, the most pedophiles, plus, we were slated for the Cemex mining project...and now this!?!? Come on! Think about our children! Think about our traffic issues, the pollution, and our property values. This is ridiculous and must not be allowed to go forward.

This is absurd and I'm not sure how this is even being considered. Build a dump near a growing suburban area or build it near an industrial area? Or find some other area? I am not one to promote detrimental exposure to our natural habitats and wildlife, but it if it means choosing between exposing our children or them; I choose safeguarding our kids. Please consider them and their future when you are evaluating this decision.

I can't understand why anyone would vote to put a recycling plant in a residential location. And why is that everytime there is an unpopular facility to be built, it's always destined for Canyon Country. This isn't a slum area! We don't want these things anymore than Valencia residents.

As a matter of fact Bob Keller does live in Canyon Country. I believe up Sand Cyn. Maybe we should suggest putting the dump near his house. I wonder what his thoughts would be then.

Regarding the consideration of a Recycle Dump in Canyon Country. We have more than enough traffic on I-14. We do not need our area assaulted by an influx of more truck traffic. Further the stores that are under construction at Golden Valley east of the I-14 will already add more traffic in our area. But this shopping traffic is more desireable than an influx of more trucking.
      Thank you.
